Climatology of Long-Track Tornadoes
نویسندگان
چکیده
A 40-year climatology (1979–2018) is presented for long-track tornadoes in the United States using Storm Prediction Center tornado database. Path length (PL) stratification thresholds are defined characteristics of supercell storm evolution, and categorized as: all (ALL), PL >0 mi or 0 km; short (S), <30 48.3 long (L), [30, 60) [48.3, 96.6) very (V), [60, 90) [96.6, 144.8) extremely (X), ≥90 144.8 sum (LVX), ≥30 km. Results show LVX tornadoes: a) made up <1% tornadoes; b) occurred east Rocky Mountains; c) were generally wider; d) caused disproportionate numbers deaths injuries; e) typically had damage ratings ≥F/EF2 (peak F/EF3); f) more often with injuries Southeast than Midwest Great Plains; g) larger area scale Destruction Potential Index; h) mostly April May versus June S i) primarily from midafternoon to early evening; j) a peak formation hour at 1600 local solar time (also true ALL S, V X), though L secondary 1800 1500, respectively; k) less common during nighttime l) frequent m) outbreaks.

Climatology, Storm Morphologies, and Environments of Tornadoes in the British Isles: 1980–2012
A climatology is developed for tornadoes during 1980–2012 in the British Isles, defined in this article as England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. The climatology includes parent storm type, interannual variability, annual and diurnal cycles, intensities, occurrence of outbreaks (defined as three or more tornadoes in the same day), ...
متن کاملTweeting and tornadoes
Social Media and micro-blogging is being used during crisis events to provide live up-to-date information as events evolve (before, during and after). Messages are posted by citizens or public officials. To understand the effectiveness of these messages, we examined the content of geo-located Twitter messages (“tweets”) sent during the Moore, Oklahoma tornado of May 20, 2013 (+/-1day) to explor...
متن کاملA long-term climatology of North Atlantic polar lows
[1] A dynamical downscaling of the 6-hourly 1948–2006 NCEP/NCAR re-analyses for the subarctic region of the North Atlantic has been used to derive a climatology of polar lows by means of a tracking algorithm based on the simulated bandpass filtered MSLP-fields. This climatology is consistent with the limited observational evidence in terms of frequency and spatial distribution. The climatology ...
متن کاملForecasting Tornadoes in Georgia
Some climatological data on the seasonal, diurnal, and geographical distribut>iorl of tornadoes in Georgia are presented, and the tornado "season" is defined as occurring from February through April. Twelve different storms producing t,ornadoes during one or more 12-hour forecast periods are studied for synoptic similarities. A mean tornado sounding and a 700-mb. composite chart, taken from dat...
متن کاملPhysically-Based Simulation of Tornadoes
In this paper, we present a physically-based model to perform 3D visual simulation of tornadoes. Simulating natural phenomena based on physically realistic models has been an active research area in computer graphics. The tornado phenomenon is a spectacular one as it demonstrates the magnificent strength of forces of nature and its shear size. Previous research on tornadoes have focused either ...
